I hope everyone gets out of there alive. I wouldn’t be surprised it was some mussie nutjob who did it.
Whats amazing is it was caused by a guy welding on top of a full tank of reprocessed oil. This all took place next to a cruise liner and 100 yards from the so called “Port Authority” in their secure area! Another half baked third world enterprise in Gib!!
Bob, before you make judgments, read the facts, this is an industrial accident, Gibraltar is far from being 3rd world and operations are of a high standard , when your dealing with anything related to oil/fuel/gas accidents can unfortunately not be avoided. Until further investigations can be carried out it is unreasonable to pass judgement. This company has been operating for years as a waste management solution with no problems, this is a unfortunate event and hopefully anyone involved is ok.
The firm concerned is an English firm and if welding was carried out without a Hot Work Permit then it is up to local authorities to investigate and proceed with the full force of the law. I am sure that welding or any other hazardous works are not allowed when liners are alongside as was the case when Shell used to have their fuel tanks on that jetty.
Poor Gib really did not need this but thank heavens nobody killed, it could have been much worse. Admit watching the Independance of the Seas leg it at high speed was
quite a sight.
