About That Archbishop Cranmer Advert

It appears that the advocation of opposite sex marriage is against the law. Just ask ask His Grace, Archbishop Cranmer. The blogger is currently being persecuted by the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) for displaying an ‘offensive and homophobic’ advert on his blog. The advert was produced for the Coalition for Marriage and you can still see it being proudly displayed on the Archbishop Cranmer blog.

Meanwhile, by way of support, here is the Max Farquar version ….

Archbishop Cranmer His Grace blog ASA same sex marriage advert persecuted advertising standards authority coalition for marriage free speech

  1. Oh well, what’s good for the goose etc. Cranny maybe a nice bloke and all that and I’m all for free speech and no censorship but I’m afraid he is reaping what his fellow god botherers have sown down the years. The gayers are only going down the path that is well trodden by these “offended” christians, complain to the authorities if you see something that goes against your beliefs and complain loudly.
Christians getting books and films banned or queers reporting blogs to the ASA. Same shit different decade.

    • Bit harsh Spackers .. but with more than a hint of truth.

I bet the old Cathars are looking on from wherever they are and having a bit of a chuckle ..

  2. Great graphics, Max. Nice to see traditional marriage (between a man and a woman – the only real form of marriage if we’re honest) is still being celebrated in the few remaining enlightened, moral and upright quarters of this increasingly strange universe! Jolly well done on your principled stance and to hell with the malcontents!

It’s called conserving high moral standards for the benefit of the vulnerable such as children, not reducing society to the lowest common denominator, to suit a very few ..err ‘exotic’ tastes! or is a democracy now dictated to by the few over the many? and the ‘belief’ that SSM is lawful and anything contrary contravenes that statute and therefore needs defending is not the case, now is it?

“The gayers are only going down the path that is well trodden by these “offended” christians, complain to the authorities if you see something that goes against your beliefs and complain loudly.” This might just be an ‘offended complaint’ too far!

    • ESB:
Christians and definitely not any of the heirarchy in the established churches can hold any moral high ground whatsoever, however much they like to think they can.
It’s always for the benefit of the children isn’t it, if I had kids me and my wife would be the ones to set them a moral standard just like our parents did for us and their parents before them. I believe there are already laws concerning what is saleable material to minors anyway without someone who believes in fairy stories sticking their oar in and trying to dictate what people can and can’t see for their own good.
I wasn’t arguing in favour of SSM just that I felt it ironic that some homosexuals had taken offence and told tales to the authorities, to much outrage, when christians have been doing the same thing for years.

“Is a democracy now dictated to by the few over the many?”
Yes, on many levels, not least the 26 unelected Bishops that sit in the HOL.

This is only a personal opinion, which no doubt will offend a few but I think all queers have a mental illness and need help.

I’m a married man: in fact twice. Both times to women (shock! horror!).

I come from a time when we all seem to be brain-washed into thinking we needed the “permission” of religion or the state to make marriage “real”.

My take on the state and religion is they can now both bugger-off (or is that homophobic?)

One further thought. There’s a lot of “indignation” floating around the interblogasphere. Freedom of this freedom of that being crushed by the jack-boot of officialdom. It’s all a wind-up. Freedom is just getting on with it and not giving a toss about the authorities and the wind-up merchants.

    • Proudhon said, “My conscience is mine, my justice is mine, and my freedom is a sovereign freedom”.

Now I was always a bit dismissive of old Pierre-Joseph, but I’ve been having another look at some of his stuff, particularly ref. the relationship between the masters and the serfs .. and quite perceptive it was too.

As you imply George, freedom is a state of mind. “Stone walls do not a prison make, nor iron bars a cage..” and all that :-) But the authorities, however they manifest themselves, do seem intent on making things bloody difficult for us, and they need cutting off at the knees wherever poss. just to remind them who actually is in charge ;)

Sorry I’m suddenly on a roll.

Freedom to do things is in the hands of the individual multiplied by the masses.

Something I’ve never tried (but maybe one day) is “Weed”. I understand it’s very therapeutic.
The “authorities” ban a plant which grows naturally. So the authorities want to ban nature. Ludicrous.

Now it seems to me the only reason people “obey” this stupid law is because they are frightened of being pick-off individually by the Nazi states enforcers.

If the “internet” was to announce a “grow-day” and thousands of people were to grow a single plant then the “authorities” and “nanny” would be well and truly stuffed.

I’m not sure what this has to do with marriage?

I think what I’m trying to say is that if people want to be married or not, or want to shack-up with a donkey or whatever. They should just do it. If people were to just do what they want to do (as long as it doesn’t harm others) and do it the state would lose it’s control over us.

    Amen

  8. As always, I have to simplify things to understand them; Cranmer should be able to say what he likes. Gay people should be able to marry in church if (a) they can find a vicar to perform the ceremony, and (b) said vicar is able to square it with the more implacable passages in Leviticus, (which has a thing or six to say about what should happen to men who lieth one with another).

Cranmer remains true to the teachings in his bible, gay people who marry do not. It really is that simple. Were God to exist, I’m pretty sure he wouldn’t give a flying fuck either way anyway. We do take ourselves ever so seriously sometimes ;)

    • Mr. C, I’ve often drawn strength at these difficult times from your er, “quotations” from the scriptures. Does the good book offer us any guidance as to how we should deal with faggots gay people, perchance?

      • Thank you Wiggy. As you say, there is much comfort to be had from Scriptures in times of uncertainty. I found this bit from Leviticus which may provide something of a way forward in these difficult times: .. ;)

“And the man that committeth adultery with another man’s wife, just because she offered it on a plate with much winking and erotic suggestion, even he that committeth adultery with his neighbour’s wife, yea even though her mummaries be bounteous, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. And if a man lie with his daughter in law, the firm-bosomed, hip wiggling strumpet, both of them shall surely be put to death: they have wrought confusion; their blood shall be upon them – dirty pair of sods. If a man also lie with mankind, that is to say that they are both like unto turd-burglars, shirt-lifters, players of the pink oboe, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. And if a man take a wife and her mother, the lucky, lucky bastard, it is wickedness: they shall be burnt with fire, both he and they; that there be no wickedness among you, and he didn’t invite the parson to have a go, the selfish cunt. And if a man lie with a beast, he shall surely be put to death: and ye shall slay the beast, for verily I say unto ye, nobody in Macdonalds will eat of a shagg-ed sheep. And if a woman approach unto any beast, and lie down thereto, thou shalt kill the woman, and the beast: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them. And yea, if old Corporal “Donkey Dick” Bailey shall claim exclusion even this shall not save him from the wrath of the Lord thy God, for remember that he is like unto a dirty beast, who doth shame his comrades in the shower block by waving his manhood hither and yon”.

p.s. You want to hear what Moses had to say for himself in Deuteronomy – he could be a nasty bastard if he’d been on the turps of a lunchtime I can tell you ;)

        • Uplifting stuff, Mr. C. I feel duly fortified I must say. And it’s all pretty much as I recall it from my Sunday School days. I always found the rest of the Bible rather boring and tedious, but Leviticus is always worth a read. There’s always some poor bastard being smited for something!
