MEPs Hard At Work

Being a member of the European Union costs the UK 1.2 billion pounds per month. So, what is it, that all those MEPs (Members of the European Parliament) do in Brussels, that costs us billions of pounds a year?

  4. This is essentially the job they have been hired to do. Pure PR. The MEPs have f-all power and the chamber is only there as a fig-leaf.

Power in the EU lies with the unelected Commission and the ECJ – even the Council of Ministers is not really as powerful as they think; it’s just another holding tank for pesky pols who, if they behave properly, will be given comfy billets as commissioners. Maybe.

We should issue bingo cards based on the seat numbers, although I think it will be a very long time before enough MEPs turn up in their seats to have anyone call out “House”.

    • Spot on, WOAR.

They are there to give the pretence of a democratic system at work, nothing more. The generous doling out of OPM ensures their obedience and also means that there is never a shortage of willing volunteers. And if they want their pension when they eventually retire, it is written in the rules that they must never, ever, criticize the EUSSR or the money will stop.

I’m going to stop now because I can sense a touch of the old Tourette’s on its way …

    • How much actual power does the man at the top of this pyramid scam – old Paedosmurf – have then? I assume it must be loads, because he surely can’t have been selected purely as some sort of inspirational figurehead!

  5. Of course it’s empty, they don’t discuss anything in public anymore (let’s quaff another £400 bottle of red before we finish up taking instruction)..

  7. I’m puzzled Max?

Why show us photos of the most productive MEP’s. The less a politician does the better for all of us.

I would be prepared to give double that for every political wanker in the UK parliament to stay at home.

  10. Why does the British worker have to retire at 66 when the French worker can retire at 62?
This suggests a reduction in our contribution – backdated,of course!

    • Why does the British worker have to retire at 66 when the French worker can retire at 62?

Because the French are in the Euro and we’re not.
If you’re in the Euro and you fancy skiving off work early at 55, 58 or even 62, then the German taxpayer coughs up for your pension. Not just France, of course, but all the other skiver nations as well, principally in the south. Got to feel sorry for those poor old Germans. They must be getting fed up with it all.;-)

      • I shouldn’t worry too much about Fritz Mr.E… I rather suspect that Frau Merkel is more than pleased with how things are panning out :-)

Mind you, she is reportedly getting a bit testy with Barry Obummer due to the inordinate delay in Germany getting its gold bullion back out of Fort Knox. The President and his Fed bosses are probably in there even now surveying the empty vaults, noticing for the first time the dust and the draped spiders webs hither and yon, and wondering if the lead bars (coated in a few mm of gold) will hold the Krauts for a bit …

        • For some utterly unaccountable reason the disappearance of the Germans’ gold has gone completely unreported in the German meda, Mr. C! They’re going to be jolly cross about this theft when they eventually find out, aren’t they?
Heap on the additional misery that they’ll never get those bail-out “loans” back from Greece, Portugal etc and they’ll have to be written off and one can’t help wondering if WW3 will kick off!
